Roberto Clemente one step away from sainthood after Pope declares baseball legend ‘blessed’: report

Roberto Clemente is in line to become a saint.

The Hall of Famer, already a saint to many since his death in 1972, is one step away from actual sainthood. He was recently declared “blessed” by Pope Francis, according to Christian News Wire, when a miracle was recently performed in his name.

A man who played Clemente in a movie recovered from paralysis, and some believe Clemente’s spirit powered his miraculous recovery.

“I've never thought of him in terms of being a saint,” former Mets second baseman Neil Walker, whose father was friends with Clemente, told Christian News Wire. “But he's somebody who lived his life serving others, really. So if it would happen, I wouldn't be terribly surprised by it.”

Olympic high jumper Jamie Nieto played Clemente in “Baseball’s Last Hero.” Three years later, Nieto was paralyzed from the neck down. Despite his injuries, Nieto walked last month when he took 130 steps at his wedding.
