The photo above was taken by pilot Ágúst Arnbjörnsson on July 11, 2017 during a flight from Keflavik to Portland, from a height of approximately 34,000 feet. The location is 75 km from Kulusuk in Greenland.

The image appears to show three plumes of steam rising from cracks in the glacier, which according to the blog of volcanologist Haraldur Sigurðsson, is 1.5 to 2 kilometers thick. This may be a sign of powerful geothermal activity from below.

Earlier this year a team of NASA researchers observed an ominous crack growing in the Petermann Glacier along the northern coast of Greenland.

Recently Greenland recorded the coldest temperature ever in the northern hemisphere for July.

The ice cover in Greenland, which reaches a thickness of up to 3 kilometers, is the largest ice mass of the Northern Earth, but a big question is how long it will be such.

Over the past 20 years, Greenland has lost more ice than it did gain in winter. If all of the Greenland's ice melted, the average sea level around the world would increase by about seven meters. At present, the Greenland Ice, by its dissolving each year raises the ocean level by 1 millimeter. A new study by British scientists has pointed to a new factor that could speed up dissolution much more than was anticipated by previous assessments.

Namely, warming enhances the development of algae that obscure the surface of the ice. Snow White whitewash up to 90 percent of the Sun's air, while the dark areas covered with algae, which the BBC occasionally called 'dark matter', reject only about 35 percent, and in the darkest regions, as much as 1 percent of the radiation.

Dr. Andrew Tedstone of the University of Bristol told the BBC that the satellite images in the observed period show the tendency of darkening the ice, with years of the most dark regions producing the most melting of ice.

The algae in Greenland have been observed more than a hundred years ago, but only recently began studying their impact on future ice-breaks thanks to the five-year British research project 'Black and Bloom', whose results will be released for two years.

Earlier research has revealed that the ice cover is covered with various pollutants that have brought winds, including dust caused by fires in Canada and pollution from the industrial centers of China, America and Europe. But research over the past five years has shown that most of the dark material is of biological nature, with different types of algae that paint ice in black, brown, green or even light-colored colors.

Austrian research team member Stefan Hofer discovered another possible factor - in the last 20 years clouds above Greenland in the summer months decreased by 15 percent.

Although the rise in temperature obviously leads to dissolution, scientists estimate that due to two thirds of the additional dissolution there is a clear cloudless sky.
