On July 15, 2017, Justine Damond (née Ruszczyk), a 40-year-old Australian woman, was shot and killed by Mohamed Noor, a Somali-American Minneapolis Police Department officer, after she had called 9-1-1 to report the possible assault of a female in an alley behind her house.

Background
Justine Ruszczyk (born c. 1977) grew up on Sydney's Northern Beaches and attended Manly High School. She graduated in 2002 from the University of Sydney as a veterinarian, then subsequently worked as a spiritual healer and meditation coach. She met Don Damond, a U.S. citizen, while attending a neuroscience workshop. The couple became engaged on December 29, 2014, and planned to marry in August 2017. Ruszczyk had assumed Damond's family name as a self-given alias ahead of their marriage. She had dual citizenship of Australia and the United States, as her father John Ruszczyk holds US citizenship.

Ruszczyk is a moderately common name, as of 1990 there were 2,038 Ruszczyk's in Poland. The basic root of the name is probably rusz-, "to move," but it's worth noting that there is a noun ruszczyk meaning "pin-clover, pin-grass, Erodium cicutarium," and many plants and grasses served as the origin of Polish surnames. Finally, the name Rusek or Ruszek is often seen given to a person of Russian or Ruthenian (Ukrainian) origin, and Ruszczyk might sometimes develop from it, meaning "son of the Russian." In a given instance it's impossible to say which of these derivations would prove relevant; for one Ruszczyk family the grass might be the connection, for another it might be Russian or Ukrainian origin, etc.
