POLITICS THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD, NOW AN OLD RELIC OF THE PAST

Spending a lot of time at my grandparents home introduced me to the Democrats. My mother's parents were dyed in the wool Democrats. Franklin D. Roosevelt's portrait hung on the wall in the hallway, years later one of John F. Kennedy joined him. Grandmother was very vocal about the Democratic Party being the "best". Republicans were terrible and they didn't care about the working man. "FDR is for the working man, always remember that." She'd say. "He took us out of the Depression."

They talked a lot about the Depression. Being so young I pictured it as a time when everyone walked around in rags, being sad with noting to eat. FDR made it so that everyone was eating again. He was a hero. He gave people jobs and he won the war. The war was a big thing. I wondered why we had to have it and was told the "Japs" started it. I didn't know what a "Jap" was. We saw servicemen everywhere, my uncle was in the pacific and grandma belonged to the Women's Corps, my aunt became a Wave and actually met Robert Taylor!. It was not good to be a German, so the neighborhood German butcher found out when his business dropped off. FDR brought us through it all. Democrat all the way!

But at home, it was different. Father was a staunch Republican, as was his father. His mother's people were Republican since Lincoln's time. Lincoln was THE MAN.....still. FDR's name was mentioned only with contempt. "He gave our country away to the bankers". I wasn't sure what the bankers would do with such a huge piece of land and how could they just take it, anyway? He viewed the Democrats as irresponsible with money in other people's pockets. Republicans were for smaller government and fiscal discipline.

Father knew and understood about money and early on we learned that the Federal Reserve was a scam that destroyed the monetary system and cheated people. I wondered at the time why we just didn't fix it back. He told us about the stock market crash in 1929 and how it ruined people financially. His father had told him, "they'll do it again."

Those two sides of my family always voted their own party line. They never crossed over. I grew up hearing both sides and there seemed no solution to me, as a kid viewing it as a constant battle between the parties in Washington.

As an adult I realized they were so busy dithering around against one another that nothing very good got done in DC and eventually dark forces crept in and took over. Today I have no respect for either party, because they aren't even a shell of their former selves. They are nothing more than a fixed wrestling match on tv......dog and pony show for the people. I voted for JFK and I was all for Perot and today I hope Trump makes it, because I listen to what the candidates SAY....and if they ring true or false. Today I ignore the parties.
