Space Command: DARPA delivery Telescope SST Air Force

The Air Force has acquired the Space Surveillance Telescope able to discover and monitor rapidly small objects that could threaten satellites.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has transferred the ownership of the telescope at the Space Command Air Force Space at a ceremony at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

The SST will be moved to Australia and managed jointly by the two countries. This is what communicates DARPA.

In 2013, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Australian Defense Minister David Johnston, signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to transfer the telescope at the Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station in Western Australia. Once operational, the SST will be re-integrated into the US Space Surveillance Network.

Designed for space situational awareness, the telescope should help prevent possible collisions with satellites orbiting at 25 miles and be able to detect the entire geosynchronous belt within its field of view several times in one night. The SST will reach initial operational capability in 2020.

The Space Surveillance Telescope observed 2.2 million asteroids in 2014 and 7.2 million in 2015. For 2016 are estimated at 10 million asteroids.

DARPA: Ares will fly next fall

The Transformer DARPA could be operational within two years. The Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System or ARES, was built by Lockheed Martin (software) with the Piasecki Aircraft (hardware) of Essington thanks to a contract signed by DARPA for a value of $ 77 million.

Ares is a tiltrotor able to take off and land like a helicopter and fly like an airplane. The fuselage will be capable of carrying various payloads distance to the troops on the battlefield.

To raise its payload, the more the fuel load module weighs three thousand pounds (1,360 kg), the demonstrator will be powered by two motors Honeywell Aerospace HTS900 by helicopter, capable of providing a power of 989 horses. The transmission is very similar to that of the helicopter Sikorsky CH-53E.

According to the specifications, Ares will reach a top speed of 170 knots at 20,000 feet, with a mission radius of about 175 miles. Lockheed Martin and Piasecki Aircraft are working to a variant able to reach 250 knots with a mission radius similar to the V-22 Osprey.

The first flight of Ares is scheduled for next autumn, a few weeks after the flight of the new V-280 Valor tiltrotor Bell Helicopter and Boeing-Sikorsky.
