A CANCER patient who was given just two months to live has made a miracle recovery - after injecting himself with mistletoe extract.

Dave Reynolds was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and was searching for a stem cell donor when doctors told him that his condition was terminal.

With just eight weeks to live, the devastated father-of-three was persuaded by his wife Dian to try an alternative therapy she had read about online.

The approach involves mistletoe extract being injected twice a week and - four months later - the 50-year-old's scans have come back clear.

Mr Reynolds, from Port Seton in East Lothian, said: "Dian was determined and would not give up; she was my rock and persuaded me to give the mistletoe therapy a chance – thank goodness she did.

"I can’t say mistletoe cured me because it’s a therapy that hasn’t been scientifically researched.

"But I can say that I went through the therapy and I am in remission after being given just two months to live.

"The only other thing I changed in my diet was adding extra vitamin C and turmeric."

Mr Reynolds began his treatment in May, travelling to charity Camphill Wellbeing Trust's Aberdeen centre for an intensive course of mistletoe injections.

On returning, he continued to buy vials of the extract online which allowed him to continue his treatment at home.

The treatment is not available on the NHS but the charity helps pay for patients who are unable to afford it.

Mr Reynolds, an investigations manager with BT, paid for the injections privately, spending £2,500 initially and now pays £200 per month for the extracts.

He continued: "We had to stay at the centre initially so they could establish what level of mistletoe my body could tolerate. But I now inject myself twice a week at home and go for regular checks to make sure the levels are okay.

"I’ve never felt fitter, even my hair has grown back darker than before."

Former England cricketer John Edrich credited mistletoe injections with surviving leukaemia after being given a maximum of seven years to live in 1999.

In a testimonial 13 years later, he said: "I remain in good health and fully enjoy life."

Dr Stefan Geider, of the Camphill Wellbeing Trust, said mistletoe was widely used in Central Europe and was the most prescribed complementary medicine.

He explained it works with the immune system to re-educate it and improves the quality of life for many patients - leaving them stronger and fitter.

But in some patients, like Mr Reynolds, it can have a big impact on their tumour, Dr Geider said.

More research needs to be done into the effects of mistletoe in fighting cancer to prove its effects

He added: "I have seen some cases like Dave, but more research is needed to look into why in cases like his there is such a dramatic change.

"I want to see it researched further. Currently it is used mainly for palliative care as part of an integrated approach, but some people begin using it very early.

"It can bring different benefits to different people but we need more research to find out why."
