European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker issued a response to a letter from the European People's Defense Lowyer that he has asked his predecessor Jose Manuel Barroso to clarify details regarding his involvement with the US bank Goldman Sachs.

The European People's Defense Lowyer Emily O'Reilly asked a few days ago Juncker to clarify the Commission's position concerning the Barroso's engagement at Goldman Sachs.

In 2001 Golmdan Sachs helped Greece to conceal the height of its public debt, which allowed to the government in Athens to continue to borrow up to completely unsustainable levels.

"Although Mr. Barroso in my contacts with him firmly promised to behave with integrity and with discretion in his new position at Goldman Sachs, I am, because it is a specific case because he was a former President of the Commission, requested the Secretary-General (European Commission) to send him a letter which will request clarifications in connection with his new responsibilities and details of his contract (with Goldman Sachs), of which will seek the opinion of an ad hoc Ethics Committee, say in the Junkcer's letter.

Barroso was last July nominated a consultant and director without executive powers of the international subsidiary of Goldman Sachs International. As a good connoisseur of the EU and its institutions he should advise the bank in connection with the consequences of leaving the UK from the EU. Barroso was president of the European Commission six years, from 2004 to 2010. His work at Goldman Sachs with the legal side is not questionable, but for many is morally questionable.

"Barroso's move has raised concerns in these challenging times for the EU, especially in terms of public confidence in its institutions. It is a matter of great public interest and should be resolved in an open and comprehensive way, "says in her letter to Juncker O'Reilly.

Juncker said that Barroso, when he takes office in Goldman Sachs, will not be accepted as a former president of Commission, but as a representative of any other interest group, which means that the members of the Commission who contact Barroso will have to comply with the same rules on transparency as when they meet with any other lobbyist.
