The Sand Pebbles (film) - Allegiances are Tested When it Hits the Fan - 14 min. Footage Added to New DVDs - Comment-Review

'The Sand Pebbles', starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Candice Bergen, Richard Crenna, Mako, and a host of other good actors, is a tremendous, colorful and exciting film which is not only about war, but political climates, romance profiles as well. 'The Sand Pebbles', a very successful movie upon release, was nominated for eight Academy Awards and eight Golden Globe Awards with Richard Attenborough winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. No doubt, Steve McQueen, nominated for Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, should have won , also. His character, Jake Holman, became a very tested, torn, individual who was pulled between his emotions, his pride, his patriotism and more.

As this story progresses, the incidents cause increased tensions between the local people, the governments, and the sailors aboard the (fictional) gunboat, USS San Pablo in 1920s China, and, the allegiances of the characters are tested. What happens when things really 'hit the fan'!?

Beautiful Candice Bergen was nominated for Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actress.

Some sources say 20th Century Fox has found fourteen minutes of formerly cut footage and added it in respective places into the film in about 2006-2007. This will be a welcome plus for fans and viewers who enjoy this movie which is available at online outlets and can probably be ordered from other stores which may or may not have the new version in stock.

More Stuff in 'The Sand Pebbles'

The military version B.A.R. (Browning Automatic Rifle) sees action in this film. Incidentally, the B.A.R., chambered in 30.06 Springfield caliber, is still a very good bet to have on your side when the chips are down. It was, in fact, good enough for the infamous Clyde Barrow, is hard hitting, can really clear ground and is ballistically stable (accurate) out to a thousand yards or more. The superior B.A.R. fires from an open-bolt system in order to augment better barrel cooling and prevent 'cook-off' of rounds (accidental discharge due to barrel heat), a John Browning extra feature.

'The Sand Pebbles' is a stupendous film which embodies personal conflicts, romance, action scenes, great cinematography and more.

This film is not cheap with DVD versions sometimes in the thirty five to fifty dollar range. There may not be too many used copies available.
