Two things surprised me during my time in hospital earlier this year: That they gave me IV antibiotics for only 3 days following surgery; and that twice a day, they offered me painkillers. :)

The first was because it had been determined, somehow, somewhere, that giving antibiotics for more than 3 days didn't improve anything. (Fine by me. :)

The second was more troubling. Seemed like everyone who entered my room asked me, "On a scale from 1 to 10, how's your pain?" That was sort of nice, but it also kept the very idea of pain freshly in my mind. And as long as I answered, "Hmm, 3, maybe 4," or more, they'd offer painkillers, my choice of something involving codeine or Percocet, which is essentially oxycontin.

The idea, in part, was that my rehabilitation exercises would be more effective if they didn't cause me too much pain. That sounded reasonable enough, so I accepted Percocet a time or two - "If you're having pain, you're not addicted," they said. :)

However, the Opioid Induced Constipation of Percocet was worse than the amount of pain I was having. :) So I decided, "No more painkillers."

Looking back, I can see how the -ease- with which I could have had a lot of Percocet could have led to addiction or at least more side effects of some kind.
