Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) praised an hour-long meeting with Donald Trump Thursday as "constructive."

McConnell and other members of his leadership team met with the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee for about an hour at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., under a heavy police presence.

McConnell offered few details, but said steps were taken toward unifying the GOP.

"We had a very good, constructive meeting," he told reporters.

Colleagues had urged McConnell to advise Trump to focus on economic issues and drop his penchant for dealing personal insults, which have become a trademark or his candidacy.

Lawmakers declined to comment on the meeting immediately afterward.

"We'll let official statements speak, but it was a good time," said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), an adviser to the Trump campaign and an early backer, who attended the meeting.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) echoed McConnell's comments on Twitter, calling it a "constructive" meeting.
