ENJOYING a cup of tea and a slice of toast for breakfast could become a lot tougher as the European Union is aiming to ban high-powered appliances such as toasters and kettles.

EU officials admit the plan has brought them ridicule and UKIP Scotland’s David Coburn has attacked them for supposedly ruining his breakfast.

The idea was thought to have been shelved at the end of February over fears it will drive the UK towards Brexit, but instead it has just been pushed back until after the referendum on June 23.

Under the European Commission plan there will be eco-design restrictions on small household appliances from the autumn.

This would see energy-inefficient devices removed from sale in order to cut carbon emissions.
