My father ran the gauntlet of 'standard' treatments for a diagnosis of prostatic cancer. One of the drugs he was given along the way had a listed adverse effect of "lethal destruction of bone marrow". He died finally in a hospital bed with the morphine dispenser turned up to 20.

My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer; she underwent mastectomy with follow-up radiation treatments. I'm not sure what did or did not directly contribute to her demise, but I would wish she'd been allowed more fun than that in her final years.
