Every now and then when I buy a cup of java at some coffeeshop, the cashier, unsolicited by me, will inform me that she's giving me a senior-citizen discount (yes, I have grey hair). Well, that's a pleasant business nicety - if you're not disappointed that you look old.

Let me say that I am never offended when I am offered a seat on the subway from a younger person, which happens quite often and I graciously turn down - it is a small act of kindness which I do appreciate.

There are a number of websites that help older folk find retailers that offer discounts to seniors. However, this columnist for The Huffington Post argues that most seniors are better off than the rest of society and so neither need nor deserve the discount.

I personally am agnostic about senior discounts, however I do believe that etiquette demands that seniors should get preference over young folk in certain situations.

Despite my age I do agree that in regard to organ transplants the young should be given preference over the old simply because the young are more likely to have successful transplants with fewer complications so that makes sense.

We all know that the young and beautiful in Hollywood get the better roles and earn more money, but this story about an old Jewish couple shows that seniors can sometimes come out on top:

Discrimination

A old Jewish couple return to a luxury car dealership where the salesman has just sold the car they were interested in to a beautiful, leggy, busty young woman.

"I thought you said you would hold that car till we raised the $155,000 asking price," said the old Jew. "Yet I just heard you close the deal for $130,000 to the lovely young lady there. You insisted there could be no discount on this model."

"Well, what can I tell you? She had the ready cash and, just look at her, how could I resist? replied the grinning salesman.

Just then the young woman approached the senior couple and gave them the keys.

"There you go," she said. "I told you I would get the dope to reduce it. See you later, Dad."

Moral: Never mess with old Jews.
