(NEW YORK) Critics say it’s a load of raging bull, but Robert De Niro is sticking by his decision to screen an anti-vaccination film at Tribeca Film Festival.
“Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe” strikes a personal chord, the Oscar winner said in a statement Friday.
“Grace (Hightower) and I have a child with autism and we believe it is critical that all of the issues surrounding the causes of autism be openly discussed and examined,” De Niro said.
“In the 15 years since the Tribeca Film Festival was founded, I have never asked for a film to be screened or gotten involved in the programming,” he continued. “However this is very personal to me and my family and I want there to be a discussion, which is why we will be screening VAXXED.”
The documentary, directed by disgraced doctor Andrew Wakefield, promises to expose “an alarming deception that has contributed to the skyrocketing increase of autism” through interviews with doctors, politicians, parents and pharmaceutical workers.
Wakefield, once a prominent researcher in Britain, was barred from practicing medicine in 2010 after his 1998 study linking the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to autism was discredited.
But the “Taxi Driver” star claimed that screening the polarizing ex-surgeon’s film was not an endorsement of the documentary or the anti-vaxxer cause.
“I am only providing the opportunity for a conversation around the issue,” he wrote.
Social media, news outlets and filmmakers alike condemned the New York-based film fest after it announced it would include “Vaxxed” in its lineup this April.
Festival officials defended the choice in a previous statement, citing a need for “dialogue and conversation.”
“We present opposing viewpoints without judgement (sic) or endorsement,” Tribeca’s Twitter account dispatched earlier this week.
But many, including documentarian Penny Lane, remain dissatisfied with that argument.
“It assumes that Vaxxed is just like any other film taking on an unpopular, controversial or provocative subject. It is not,” she wrote in an open letterposted to Facebook.
“There is a big difference between advocacy and fraud, between point of view and deception. For you to claim there is no difference, and for you to screen this film, perpetuates Wakefield’s fraud.”
The doc is slated to screen April 24 at the SVA Theater.
