Mycoplasma genitalium has the smallest known genome of any natural non-viral organism, with 525 genes. Now scientists have created a synthetic microbe with only 473 genes. They did this by deleting genes from another mycoplasma, M. mycoides, until they found the minimum set necessary for viability.
It turns out the new organism, named Syn 3.0, is actually much more viable than its slightly larger natural cousin M. genitalium. That they are playing with potentialities they do not understand is shown by the fact they they don't known the function of 31% of the remaining genes. Nevertheless, they dream of adding in new genetic functionality to create franken-microbes for all sorts of biomedical and industrial applications.
And meanwhile various other scientists around the world are ready to start creating designer babies by tinkering with human genetics, where 99% of the genome is not understood.
