Rank, Alpha position, is usually referring to the act of bullying. All it means, is that an individual is willing to use violence, to express the desire to dictate. Like, "give me your lunch money, or you will receive the most painful wedgie known to mankind." It can also occur in other ways, like an expression of skill. Inspirational demonstrations of a skill can temporarily make you an alpha, as a leader. Note, that being someone who is willing to beat the shit out of anyone that disagrees with you does not make you a leader. Just an asshole.

As far as the food fighting alpha/rank, this is a fear-based action/reaction. When it is time to eat, the alpha fears not getting to eat, so much, that it will beat up others that attempt to get some food. Apparently the stomach is the leader in those situations.

Fear of sensory deprivation (not getting food), and its associated response, as in violence, breeds desperation. It doesn't have to be that way.

Another way to look at this, after the dominance over property rights have been established, is maintenance of personal property, which is self-defense.
