The drug is used in Russia and Eastern Europe, in America, is not approved

Until last Monday nobody there heard about a substitute Meldonium. But after the press conference at which Maria Sharapova announced that she has fallen on doping test at the Australian Open because of Meldonium, this substitute has come into the spotlight of the sports world.

According to the website of the manufacturer, the Latvian company Grindex, Meldonium, also known under the name mildronate, is the anti-ischemic drug that is used by people with heart problems and blood circulation problems.

Ischemia is a condition in which tissues and organs do not receive enough oxygen because of hindered blood flow in the vessels that supply them. A drug that prevents this is Meldonium. In addition, the drug improves physical capacity and mental function.
The drug is not approved in the US

According to the German study, Meldonium helps increase endurance of athletes, protects against stress, speeds up recovery time after strenuous training or competition and increases the specific activity of the central nervous system. This all means that Meldonium can be used to increase sport performance.

The World Anti-Doping Agency revealed at the beginning of 2015 the disturbing number of athletes have benefited of this substance, indicating that it was by may used for non-medical purposes. It was added to the list of drugs that increase the efficiency of athletes was and banned from 1 January 2016. The drug is not approved in the United States and is used mainly in Russia and Eastern European countries.
