US Navy intends to launch a life extension (Service Life Extension Programme - SLEP) for Boeing F / A-18E / F Super Hornet fighter aircraft, according to a notice published on FedBizOpps. The news was originally published by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) on January 19, and was updated on 1 February. This deal means it will extend the lifespan of the fuselage from the planned 6000 flight hours to more.

NAVAIR did not reveal details of the number of aircraft involved in the program, the extent of increase in life expectancy, deadlines and contract. It is not yet known whether the program will apply to international operators of the aircraft, which are currently limited to Australia, but it is expected to soon be joined by Kuwait also. The US Navy has about 550 F / A-18E / F Super Hornet aircraft, the first of which came into service in late 90s. Those could spend their 6000-hours flight time in 2017, which is two years before the declaration of initial operational capability for the Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) on a aircraft carrier.
