TRUTH IN GOVERNMENT? YOU BETCHA! (Part I)
A Short Guide on How to Read Government “Tells”

By Sandy Sandfort

I don’t need to tell readers here that governments lie. We all know that lies are fundamental to manipulating the citizenry. This does not mean, however, that you shouldn’t pay attention to what government spokespeople say. If you know how to listen, you can gather vital intel to protect yourself and your family. By understanding why certain things are said—or not said—you can improve your chances of surviving government-created calamities and maybe even come out ahead of the game sometime.

Governments do have “tells” just like poker players. If you learn to read those tells, you have an edge over the other players at the table. Believe me, in America, with a third of a billion players at the table, you really want to have that edge.

In poker, players take counter-measures to reduce or eliminate their tells. They wear dark glasses, don’t chat, keep tight control of their bodies’ fidgeting, etc. So why don’t governments just button their lips and say nothing so they won’t give anything away?

The reason is that even the most repressive, Stalinesque dictators (North Korea comes to mind) know that their power depends on the, at least passive, cooperation of the masses. Once a certain point of disobedience is passed—and it isn’t really that great—no dictatorship is strong enough to survive. So, much effort is expended to keep the population mollified. In historically “free” countries (the US comes to mind) the governments have to work even harder to rationalize their actions to their citizens or risk revolt.

What causes these statements to come up in the first place? Proactively, when the governments want to do something that it knows will not be popular, it presents talking points early on to frame the discussion and control the narrative (i.e., jumpstart the “spin” factory).

Reactively, when negative issues have come up publicly, the government is forced to react to contain the controversy. While this has always been the case, the internet (blessed be its name) has supercharged the rumor mills. Just one video that goes viral can ruin a bureaucrats whole day. So they have to jump in to try and control the dialog.

To do that, various public officials and spokespersons issue press releases, make official statements or offer “off the cuff” comments. Rejoice, because such statements give you a window into the real intent of their words. They allow you to take advantage of that look behind the curtain.

Why is that important? Ultimately, all such statements have the same motivation. They are either trying to get you to do something or to refrain from doing something. If you can figure out what that something is, you can choose to go along with the government’s wishes, let it pass, if it is not relevant to your life or do the opposite. Why the opposite? A couple of examples, below, should show you why being a contrarian is where you gain the most or at least lose the least.

Before we look at the examples, here is what you should be looking for. After the official pronouncement of what is being done, look for these sorts of supporting statements and elements. In each case, your response should be to ask yourself (a) what are they trying to get me to do (or not do) and (b) why? Once you figure out why, you are ready to take whatever action that will serve your interests best; not the States:

It’s good for you – This can be a supposed benefit or avoidance of a danger, inconvenience, expense, etc. The thing is, such benefits are usually pretty thin gruel. So the real question is cui bono? Who benefits? Chances are, it’s not you.

It’s only temporary – There is nothing so nearly eternal as a temporary government action. When I was at university in the mid-’60s, many classes were conducted in “temporary” buildings erected during World War II. So when the government feels it necessary to assure you that what they are doing is “temporary,” smile. It’s a lie and you know it.

Nothing is really being changed – Uh-huh, sure. If they feel they need to say that, it’s a lie. Time to figure out how to make that change work for you.
It is necessary – “Our world is much more complex that that of our Founding Fathers,” “our current situation is special,” etc. Chances are, whatever it is is not necessary at all. Read with a critical eye and see why they want you to think it is necessary. If that flies with the public, what will the next “necessity” be? Often, really bad things are done incrementally (Think, boiling frog.) You need to be two steps ahead of the general public in preparing for what is to come.

The rumors are wrong – Really? The government does not need to deny silly rumors. If a government goes to the trouble of aggressively denying a rumor, it’s probably true. So your job is to figure out what it will mean to you, your loved ones and the country if the rumor is true, and act accordingly.

An enemy – People are highly motivated to cooperate with the government when they see an enemy threat. No enemy? Don’t worry, the spokesperson will come up with one or more—ISIS, immigrants, speculators, the Chinese, global warming. So again, what do they want you to do or not do?

A hero – “Thanks to President Hillary Clinton’s leadership, this problem has been targeted for a (government) solution, blah, blah, blah.” This approach shifts attention away from the evidence for the problem and the reasonableness of the solution to being a popularity contest. Don’t be distracted. Study the issues and figure out your best move for you and your family.

Bumper-sticker logic – “Better Dead than Red,” “Remember the Alamo/the Maine/Pearl Harbor/9-11.” I think if government types had the talent to make it into a jingle, they would. Stick to the facts and act accordingly.

“My health” or “more time with my family” – I just threw this one in for a very special sort of official statement. It just means, “yes, I got caught in bed with a 13-year old (of either sex)” or “yes, I did have sexual relations with that woman…” but we knew that anyway, didn’t we?

Okay, I think you understand the principle here. In a nutshell: Figure out what they want you to do or refrain from doing, then do the opposite of it to your benefit.
