The GPS system does not use satellites. It uses the ground stations such as cell phone towers and thus triangulates the position of the user. As the user is located at a given location there is someone else who can observe that cell phone emitting interaction.

And that part of it is the factor that worries the military.

It is also the reason that if you carry a cell phone with you, that phone whether on or off will allow someone at another location to track the movement of that phone and thus you.

For example if you ran into some trouble and needed help and you rang 000 here in Oz (911 for you) the police will know your location immediately due to the cell phone giving out its emitting signal as recognized by the base stations closest to you at that time and location. How do I know this for sure? Well because I was in a situation where I needed to call 000 when someone damaged “my” car by carelessly breaking off the left mirror and would not give his details to pay for the damage. So I called the police. The police woman I spoke to asked me to confirm if I was at the location I was calling from which was in the parking area of a forest reserve. Bingo! they knew exactly where I was. They seek confirmation of my location as their way to vet out caller frauds. One is not allowed to mislead the police, as they take a dim view of such. And so they should.

The ‘Tom Tom’ is derives its name from the old type of drums used by tribes to alert for hostile tribes or to communicate messages in code between tribes or camps. The Tom Tom is also the brand name or type of positioning device used in many countries.

I use several ‘tom toms’ on my drum kit. They are concert tom toms with only a single head or “skin” (as they once were made from animal skins) which back in those years of the 70s and 80s were considered better suited for live performances.
