Africans view time as flexible, fluid, and schedules as changeable on a whim; this has negatively inhibited Africa's progress. Such a mindset, where individuals believe they can do anything whenever they feel like it, can destabilise their mental foundations. This instability can affect their approach to science, technology, the rule of law, engineering, and various other fields.

Unlike individuals raised in a monochronic culture, where time is viewed as linear, strict schedules and deadlines are the norm, and time is money.

Below are some fundamentals of polychronic vs monochronic cultures. This clearly explains some of the shortcomings of Africans and the successes of the West and East Asia.

Polychronic:
Focuses on people & relationships
Multitasking is normal

Several activities at once
Priorities can shift quickly
Relationships come before tasks
Personal interactions are highly valued
Interruptions are acceptable
Informal, expressive
Conversations may overlap
Context and emotions matter

Monochronic:
Focuses on time & tasks
One task at a time
Focus and completion are key
Tasks follow a planned order
Work is separated from personal life
Interruptions are discouraged
Direct, structured
Clear and precise communication
Less tolerance for ambiguity
