From one scandal to another. Well, this one's a sofa scandal that's erupted as it became clear that rules designed to boost the fire safety of British sofas do NOT prevent the use of TOXIC chemicals.

by the way, a potential cancer risk. Up to (1if ? )of the foam used in sofas with fire safety labels contained athat was probably carcenic to humans according to the WHO, the World Health Organization. Well, the government has now confirmed that new laws will be introduced to bring the UK into line with the rest of the world. Well, uh, the campaign to ban the chemicals was led by Dillith Featherston Dilk, the anholsterer in Richmond. Well, she joins me now down the line. Thank you so much for joining me this evening. Tell me about how you how you got into this story. It's absolutely fascinating stuff and isn't it's I so many people were writing in last night about their own sofas. How worried perhaps should they be?

Yeah, that's a difficult one to answer.
um we're exposed to quite a lot of toxic chemicals, whether it's fertilizers nearby or so the chemicals in your sofa, there's just quite a heavy load in the home because if you've got two armchairs and a sofa, 2 kg per item of chemicals,

that's um yeah, it's concerning.
How did you come across this um discovery?
I was doing a diploma on in furniture design and I tried to do a deep dive into each of the materials to create the most healthy sofa. and uh never created the sofa, but instead um -really became knowledgeable about each of the different items we put in our sofa and which chemicals are used and then started working with the scientists who've been researching them and talking to industry and trying to build awareness and build a picture and talk to the government about it.

Yeah. And and Stillith, what sort of chemicals are we talking about here? How prolific are they inside the sofa? Is it some is it sort of everywhere? Is it is it is it part of the the makeup of the foam?

Yeah. So, um foam is in most of our sofas. If you've got a a really old sofa, it might have horseair, which is utterly wonderful, and keep it.
But most sofas you buy have got foam in them. And the the the two main chemicals used are TCPP and melamine. And as you rightly said a minute ago, TCPP has just been named a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization and that was following a big um study in America uh which found it caused cancer in female mice. So that's really problematic and we the deferra have realized the problem and they're now saying our sofas can't go to landfill. And I I'm sure your
listeners will have spotted at at the tip you've got this great big separate skip called pops and that's for the um that's for sofas to go into
