When I was in high school in the 1960s, there was a required class called Georgia History and Civics.

The one thing I remember from that class: We were asked to memorize all the cities and towns destroyed by Sherman's March to the Sea.

"March to the Sea" - sounds almost pastoral, doesn't it? :) But it was a huge swath of destruction and devastation, as described in the well-written text quoted in the above post.

Atlanta, Decatur, Lithonia, Covington, Madison, Shadydale, Eatonton, Milledgeville...and on and on it went.

I don't remember a single thing about that class, other than that list - and all the destroyed and upturned lives it had to represent.

The "March to the Sea", done for political reasons, was as pointless and cruel and unconscionable as the much later decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, when it served no actual military purpose to do so.
