SAFETY BULLETIN - Keep Your Grass Mowed Below 'Rattlesnake Height' - Summer Rains

Parts of the country have had an excess of rains and thunderstorms which create plenty of grass and weed growth. This semi-rural area has seen rains or thunderstorms every day and some nights for over a month to a month and a half or more. The result is an almost constant need to mow the lawn due to the fast growth from the rains.

Aside from promoting general yard and property cleanliness, there are some important reasons to keep the yards and lots mowed and free of high grass and high weeds. The gnats, mosquitoes, skunks, mice, and other vermin like all the high grass cover, but more importantly an occassional rattlesnake or other snake might be found in such high grass conditions. It's more difficult to spot those venomous critters in such high grass, but if it uncoils on someone it may create a life-threatening situation, especially if it bites above the waist, etc..

Keeping the grass down to what you might call 'rattlesnake height' will help prevent close encounters of the venomous kind, especially if such critters are easily visible before approaching them.

Try to take time out for yard work or pay to have it done, especially during rainy seasons. It is even more critically important where kids are known to play, etc..
