Good morning Hobie:
A nice article. We all need to be reminded to CLEAN and treat wounds. Often we look for commercial ointments and when we can't find any don't look to what is around us at home and in some cases in the yard or the woods.
I still see friends have an open cut or abrasion wiping the wound on a pair of dirty work pants or shirt sleeve. People don't realize bacteria is everywhere including on our skin. It does not bother us because we have natural barriers like unbroken skin. When these harmless bacteria like Streptococci get into the wound or blood stream we have problems. At least more than we originally should have if properly taken care of.
Streptococci is a natural harmless bacteria that is on all our bodies. But it can be deadly if it gets into your body and blood stream. You can become septic and start losing limbs and life in 24 hours. NOT a threat, a fact!
Not trying to scare people, but to point out you are the ultimate protection for your body. Your brain needs to be programmed to clean the wound (and not with dirty pond or river water) and apply some type of poultice to protect the wound. Apparently clean streams also can have harmful bacteria. Moss as an example is a good antibiotic.
We keep an Aloe Vera in our home and use that instead of commercial ointments that can be petrolatum based.
Knowing a few common herbs and the beneficial properties is a really good idea as well. Original pharmaceuticals came from herbs.plants. Vitamins come from herbs/plants, etc. And the synthetic drugs of modern medicine were derived from such plants. Problem is synthetic petroleum medicines can have side effects and often isolate the treating component of the original plant ignoring the balancing benefits of other chemicals in the natural herb/plant.
A good book on herbs and minerals as well as vitamins would be a great addition to any home. Reading them gives you immediate ideas as to how and when to use them. Not reading them they become useful paper weights or fire starters. Read a little each day and discuss what you learned or make notes and put tabs in the book to help you remember what is where so that you can look it up later.
Many cultures have devised, discovered the benefits of plants local to their habit and we need to learn more about those periods and plants to better understand how to treat ourselves without the heavy reliance on synthetic medicines.
I know this all sounds good and you will look into it when you have time. That never happens and you know it.
I can't tell you how many times my 30 plus years of biomedical research has lead me to common treatments from nature that worked and worked well. You have to pick and choose, talk to friends about what works for them and listen to others when they share information. Elders often used old remedies and visited old fashioned pharmacies that still existed until the late 1970s to some extent.
Marketing, heavy handed marketing turns us away from the natural solutions because they cannot be patented. Without patents they cannot be protected and profits controlled. You cannot patent natural minerals, herbs, etc. So some online WEB sites offer high priced solutions that include natural products with a combination of non-essential products to they become patent concoctions. Look at the ingredients and buy the herbs that help you at a far lower price. OR if you have too much money buy the more expensive product.
Recently, my blood pressure set world records 214/115 and my oxygen level dropped to 92$. That shocked me because I am a very active individual exercising heavily 5 days a week, eating like a horse, physically fit and taking a series of vitamins and minerals every day!
I am 73 and at 220 pounds built like a rock, I don't look or feel 73. What happened?
First thing was NOT going to the doctor and NOT getting dangerous blood pressure medicines.
This was a new problem for me, but I have been doing a lot of research over the years which includes vitamins, minerals, herbs, and foods with protein, fats and fiber, etc. I know how the body works.
I analyzed the situation and knowing my body well, created a list of things I could do to lower my blood pressure. It took a month, but now though not perfect my oxygen is at 99% and my blood pressure is 150/85 (not perfect but survivable) and it will be going down.
What happened? I was working out 2 intense body building 1 hour sessions a day, 5 days a week and depleting my vitamin levels. Essentially, I became anemic, there were not enough vitamins like B2, B6, B12, C or calcium to produce sufficient Red blood cells. This meant the existing blood cells got larger and raised my blood pressure. While these blood cells did not carry sufficient oxygen, part of the reason for that was again lack of proper minerals and vitamins like IRON, to support the Red blood cells function to carry oxygen.
It was a mixture of vitamins, minerals, herbs and diet that corrected and is continuing to correct the situation as well as my cutting back to exercising once a day 5 days a week.
Yes, you can exercise too much! if you do make sure you compensate by adding sufficient nutrients to that process.
Knowing your body and how it functions, as well as, how to care for it is critical to your health. If you don't invest time in knowing you are blindly taking advice from a stranger. Some doctors are more interested in profits or are forced to recommend drugs that are not good for you and can cause further damage. They are not allowed to recommend natural medicines because it is not profitable to Big pharma a part of the corrupt medical system.
It is your body and you will suffer the most from improper cures and toxic treatments. If I had followed prescribe solutions by doctors I visited I would be DEAD 20 years ago. NOT AN exaggeration. The drugs were pulled because they were killing people. At the time the doctor INSISTED I take them calling me crazy for not doing so even after I pointed out the toxic side effects of that particular drug! An arrogant doctor not appreciating my knowing more about medication.
Doctors typically do not study herbs, minerals, or pharmaceuticals. They look up conditions on the computer and program you can access as well tells them what you likely have and a prescription from a list of possible health conditions and solutions. It also lists the side effects if they care to look them up, but with only 15 minutes per patient who has the time.
TAKE YOUR LIFE INTO YOUR OWN HANDS; you go to general practitioners (doctors) for opinions, tests and advice. Then it is up to you to decide what you should do. By the way some doctors still recommend the Clot Shot and some hospitals still demand wearing face mask even though the mask are also consider a health risk!
If you have an emergency or need a surgery you may need a specialist capable of dealing with those situation.
Emergency rooms can take care of broken bones, severe wounds or limbs falling off. There are doctors that are excellent and there are doctors that are that must follow edicts from the hospital, insurance companies and Big Pharma.
All the best,
