Third, carbon tax is about controlling the emitter, not the emission. Bodies (souls) emit.

If that happens then it's all over. A quick slight of hand gives every newborn child x-number of credits based on average or assessed years of life expectancy. All others receive proportional according to expected remaining life. Eating meat or having a pet costs you credits.

(This is actually how congress is supposed to apportion money into the u.S. economy, but...)

It would all seem fair at first. Everyone has more than enough credits to finish a normal life even if you eat some meat and have a pet. If you need a few more you can by excess on the market made possible by the trading in the souls of men and cattle. Gold and currencies seem stable because they are backed by a predictable number of credits in existence. AI runs the show so it's perfectly fair and unbiased. What more could one ask for?

Intangibles fail but that's not serious matter at this point. The population has tacitly agreed that it's existence is just credit. When credits are in short supply balance is achieved by curbing the requisite number of lives. Those who lives are not required are content. AI made the calls so there is no-one to blame. It's all good, and the lottery was so exciting!
