Former Israeli Defense Minister said on Sunday that a new US security adviser to Donald Trump was trying to persuade him to attack Iran.

"I know John Bolton since he was US Ambassador to the UN," said Shaul Mofaz, who was the defense minister from 2002 to 2006, at a press conference in Tel Aviv.

"He tried to convince me that Israel must attack Iran," Mofaz said, and published the Ynet Internet portal.

Mofaz said Bolton applied pressure when he served as UN ambassador during George W. Bush's time.

The new Trump National Security Adviser, 69-year-old Bolton, was very controversial at the UN.

Though he was liked by some diplomats during his term, many were irritated by his firm hand in diplomacy.

"I do not think it's smart, not for Americans today or for anyone as the threat is real," Mofaz said of a potential attack on Iran.

Mofaz, together with Israeli army chief Benny Gantz, Dana Halutz and Moshe Ya'alon, spoke on a panel in which they said they were opposed to the annulment of the Iranian nuclear agreement, against which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was very critical.

Bolton is hawk of foreign policy and advocates a hardline stance against Iran.

He is against the nuclear agreement that the world forces have agreed with Iran in 2015 and has often called for attack on Iranian nuclear installations.

Three years ago, in 2015, the New York Times wrote a comment titled "Stop the Iranian Bomb, Let's Fight Iran".
