Another free weekend movie, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Actually it's 8 movies from the same series with the same stars (i.e. a playlist).

For me, Basil Rathbone has always been the quintessential Sherlock Holmes bar none. I love him as this character!

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are still seen by many as the quintessential Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson, the definitive screen portrayal of literature's greatest detective and his “faithful watchdog”. Many others have played the parts admirably but Rathbone & Bruce's partnership is one of the most recognisable in cinema. Together, they starred in fourteen films from 1939 to 1946 as Holmes & Watson.

Rathbone's portrayal of Holmes is critically acclaimed. His powerful voice, physical resemblance to the great detective, and his screen presence still equates Holmes with Rathbone in the minds of many people, over 70 years later. Other actors have played the part well, particularly Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett, Arthur Wontner, and Robert Downey Jr puts in a good turn these days; but for me, Rathbone's interpretation is archetypal.

Sherlock Holmes (1939 film series)

A series of fourteen films based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories were released between 1939 and 1946; Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce played Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively. The first two films in the series were produced by 20th Century Fox and released in 1939. The studio stopped making the films after these, but Universal Studios acquired the rights from the Doyle estate and produced a further twelve films...

In the 1970s four of the Universal-produced films fell into the public domain when their copyright was not renewed. These four films were restored and colourised. Some of the films in the series had become degraded over time, with some of the original negatives lost and others suffering from nitrate deterioration because of the unstable cellulose nitrate film. The UCLA Film and Television Archive restored the series, putting the films onto modern polyester film, in a process that was jointly paid for by UCLA, Warner Bros. and Hugh Hefner.
