The fact that John Conyers is not only still “serving” in the position of a United States Congressman but also, given his increasingly exposed history, employed in that capacity longer than anyone else is an indictment not only of him but of Congress as a whole.

A female lawyer who previously worked for Conyers and later went on to oversee an ethics watchdog group has now come forward. Melanie Sloan confirmed to the Detroit Free Press that she was the subject of various kinds of abuse while working for Conyers. Hypocrite Democrats love to lecture others as they embrace and practice selective and intermittent dignity as the standard for those they interact with themselves.

While Sloan maintains that none of the abuse was sexual in nature, she claims the Congressman did attend a meeting wearing only his underwear. Certainly sexual implications could be drawn even if nothing overt happened and there is no disputing that it is inappropriate. She also alleges verbal abuse and excessive and rude criticism of her appearance.

Sloan work for three years as a Democrat counsel on the House Judiciary Committee during the 1990s. She told the Detroit Free Press that Conyers “constantly berated her, screaming at her and firing her and then rehiring her several times.”

Sloan recalled one incident in which she had organized a committee field hearing on crime in New York City and was pulled out of the event to a backstage area so that she could babysit one of his children.

She said, “His constant stream of abuse was difficult to handle and it was certainly damaging to my self-respect and self-esteem. It made me increasingly anxious and depressed about going to work every day. And there was no way to fix it. There was no mechanism I could use, no person I could go to.”

She says that she tried to get help from a multiple individuals, including the committee staff, a reporter and a senior staff member of then-Democrat Leader Dick Gephardt, and was told there was nothing that could be done. She was even besmirched as being “mentally unstable” for making such claims.

Sloan says she is coming forward to lend support to those making complaints against Conyers’ behavior and also because of the babysitting assignments being handed out to taxpayer-funded employees. In 2003 there were similar complaints which Conyers was able to tamp down by promising in a deal to ensure that staffers knew where the boundary lines of propriety were drawn.

Conyers remains, as he has done throughout his career, defiant in his denials of the allegations, waiting for attention to shift and to once again strike a favorable bargain with the ethics committee. With information of the fact that over $27,000 of taxpayer money was paid out by his office to settle a claim of sexual misconduct now public information, it’s going to be much harder for him to brush off the allegations.

In buying Conyers some time for things to settle down his attorney, Arnold Reed, issued a statement which was released on Thursday saying that Conyers is innocent, has no plans to resign, will “cooperate” if the House investigates. for In a statement released Thursday, Reed said his client maintains his innocence, has no plans to resign and will cooperate if the House decides to investigate. He’ll address the allegations in a news conference after the Thanksgiving holiday.

In adopting the strength and safety in numbers position, Reed said Conyers is taking the allegations seriously but “If everybody that was facing ‘allegations’ — including the president, members of the House and Senate — resigned, we’d have a lot of unemployed people walking around.”

Democrats are masters at muddying the water, deflection and survival. The Christmas break is coming as well as a funding battle and the DACA amnesty fight. Conyers knows that many, if not most of the members of Congress have similar secrets they don’t want exposed to the voters. They’ll be looking for a way to look the other way; all he has to do is hold on and let time pass.
