So many things have happened over the last 100 or so days that you could nearly forget that President Trump vowed soon after taking office that he would create a task force to look into the issue of voter fraud in our elections. Trump, who has said on numerous occasions that he believes that fraudulent voting was the only thing that allowed Hillary Clinton to capture the popular vote, was expected to sign an executive order on Thursday creating that very task force.

The order, titled “Presidential Commission on Election Integrity,” would establish a commission, chaired by Vice President Mike Pence, to review alleged voter fraud and suppression. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who has investigated voter fraud in Kansas, will serve as vice chair.

According to the White House, the commission will include both Republicans and Democrats and some secretaries of state. It will review practices that affect the integrity of federal elections — spanning improper registrations, improper voting, fraudulent registrations, fraudulent voting and voting suppression.

Almost no one in either party has come to the president’s defense when it comes to claims of widespread voter fraud, but Trump has not wavered from his initial suspicions. And clearly, even if the evidence does not indicate that millions of votes were cast illegally in the 2016 election, it doesn’t hurt to have a bipartisan task force willing to look into the matter. Anything we can do to strengthen and support the country’s election systems is a good thing.

Well, it’s a good thing, that is, if you don’t WANT people voting illegally. But then, how many Democrats can say that without lying through their teeth? The truth is that they are, in many states, doing everything possible to weaken efforts to secure the voting systems. They vehemently oppose any voter ID programs, claiming they unfairly suppress minorities, and they have made headway in several states when it comes to getting illegal immigrants the right to vote in local elections. One imagines it won’t be long before they try to expand that progress to include presidential elections as well.

Our democracy doesn’t work when the people lose faith in the underlying integrity of the vote. And that’s what has been happening over the last decade. It needs to be examined thoroughly and without bias. Trump complained often and loudly about the “rigged system”; this is his chance to do something about it.
