Text + video: Camera angles in last night's Commander-in-Chief forum were chosen to favor Hillary
I don't know if you could "feel" the difference in last night's forum, but I could - so I went looking for confirmation.
What I found, as expected, was that placing a character on the right side of the screen helps him or her to be experienced as good and powerful, while placing a character on the left side of the screen helps him or her to be experienced as weak or bad or even sinister.
Most shots of Hillary had her looking toward the left, thus positioning her in our minds as being on the right of our view. Most shots of Trump had him looking toward the right, thus positioning him in our minds as being on the left of our view.
The video below is chiefly about direction of movement in scenes and makes the point that our minds favor movement from left to right and feel uncomfortable when movement is from right to left.
But at about 5:20 there's mention of an essay by Roger Ebert about such things, in which he says we favor characters placed on the right and think less well of characters placed on the left. Interesting, Ebert says, it does not seem to be a cultural distinction, as he had noticed that Asian film makers use placement and direction of movement in the same way to achieve the same effects.
