Part 4 in our series on the lead contamination crisis in Indiana. The
residents of the West Calumet Complex in northwestern Indiana have been
ordered to evacuate after learning of the dangerous contamination in and
around their homes.

On Aug. 19, 2016, HUD (Housing and Urban Development) announced the release
of $1.9 million in federal funds for the relocation of West Calumet
residents who had lived on lead contaminated soil for years and even
decades. The funds will be administered by the East Chicago Housing
Authority, which has had struggled to adequately and professionally serve
the 1,200 people seeking information about the safety of their families, as
this report suggests.
