"We know of more than 340 cases," said the director of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Hans-Georg Maas to dpa. "But these are just the cases we know about. There's probably a lot more of them," he said.

Worrying situation

The staff at the German refugee centers is aware of the situation, said Maas. "We are concerned that Salafists and other Islamists are promoting their views," said Maas, referring to the ultra-conservative reformist movement within Sunni Islam.

"We know that among asylum seekers there are a lot of young people of Sunni orientation. They often come from conservative Islamic circles and want to go every Friday to the mosque where they speak Arabic," said the head of the intelligence agencies stating that Germany also has a much more radical Salafi mosques.

"Mosques in which Arabic is spoken in Germany are not regulated. As for the state, there is little that can be infuenced," said Maas.

Maas said that the Islamist attacks are also carried out before the recent worsening of the situation of violence in the past few months in Germany, and that the targets were also a policeman in Hanover as well as the Sikh Temple in Essen.

"The lesson we should learn from all is that we must not concentrate only on the IS, which can send the terrorist forces in Europe, for example, to Paris or Brussels," said Maas. "Instead, this may be individuals who are self-radicalized or receive orders."
