The only thing certain is that Sunday afternoon, a drone of some sort has violated one of the most protected airspaces in the world, that of Israel. With some embarrassment, the Israelis claimed that the drone was not intercepted despite against it three missiles were launched. The drone came from Syria.
A few seconds after detecting of the UAV on the Golan Heights, the Israelis launched two missiles Patriot PAC-2 interceptors in rapid sequence: both missed the mark. The General Staff decides to send an F-16 to reduce the threat, while all of missile defense stations in northern Israel were put on alert and ready to fight. The fighter frams the drone, shoots a missile, but fails to hit him. The drone will never be knocked down and will return to Syria without any harm.
US intelligence and Israeli, remain cautious issue of news to avoid unpleasant repercussions. The US missile shield, in fact, is sold as one of the best in the world: this episode could confirm that against modern threats, such as UAVs, this asset would be helpless.
According to the IDF, the drone could be Russian-made. Israel fears that the drone may have been sent by Hezbollah, which is currently fighting alongside the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad, for taking pictures of military maneuvers in the Golan. Speculations in this regard, although there is no claim.
On previous occasions, Israel has already shot down enemy drones on the Golan, but what happened demonstrates the effectiveness of the UAV threat, can overcome also one of the best defensive screens of the world as that of Israel. Although advanced, the air defenses of Israel were unable to intercept a single UAV threat. If it had been an attack on the swarm, the direction in this regard is taken now, the Iron Dome and David's Sling systems may not be able to intercept a stratified threat. Or, maybe, we witnessed the first known episode that would confirm a reverse engineering program at the expense of the secret US technology.
First things first. In May 2014, the Iranian state television showed images of a replica of the US drone RQ-170 Sentinel. Since 2011, Iran claims to be able to decode the secrets of the Sentinel, he shot down in December of the same year after entering into Iranian airspace from the eastern border with Afghanistan. The United States initially said they had lost a drone near the Afghan border, and then confirm the removal of the Sentinel during a spy mission over an Iranian nuclear facility. According to the United States, Iran would "never" been able to unravel the Sentinel technology, because of security protocols included in drones operating over hostile territory.
On October 27, 2013, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have in Russia an unmanned spy plane that - according to Tehran - would result from a reengineering process of a US drone captured in 2012.
In December of 2012 Tehran claims to have captured at least three unmanned ScanEagle. The re-engineering process took place precisely captured by the UAV. The US military has always denied having lost ScanEagle on Iran, however, the Canadian media, quoting official documents, confirmed the loss of one ScanEagle in the Arabian Sea in 2012. Also from, however, they belied categorically that the Canadian Navy drone was lost It was recovered by Iran.
The ScanEagle UAV is a low cost, produced by a subsidiary of Boeing. Weights five kilograms, has a wingspan of 3.1 meters and can stay airborne for 22 hours and eight minutes. Iran has gained considerable experience in the field of re-engineering, much of it supplied by the United States precisely at a time when relations between Tehran and Washington were great. Since then, Iran has been able to buy spare parts for most of its US hardware and had to resort to the re-engineering to keep it running. We know, however, that Iran receives technological support from North Korea, Russia and China. Speculation, really, but a few hours ago that drone managed to escape three missiles.
It 'possible that the secrets of the Sentinel, assuming it was shot down by the Iranians, have been decoded? It would be too presumptuous to think that some of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, may not be able to do so. Among insiders, it fabled for some time of a drone equipped with exceptional maneuverability developed in the Middle East. His control systems combined with the optimized design, the grant in an unmatched maneuverability, the same that would allow the drone to escape the three Israeli missiles of American production.
In September of 2013, Tehran claimed to have completed the re-engineering process of the Sentinel, announcing the sale to third parties of the acquired technology. How much truth there is in Iran's utterances, we'll never know, as the country remains unknown who launched the drone in the Golan Heights.
Finally, it would be appropriate to bring another fact which if confirmed (and it will) could confirm the existence of the new UAV: the drone would have flown for nearly an hour Israeli airspace, crossing the airspace also controlled by the Russians. For this latter, the drone does not exist.
