Health and news websites are filled with troubling reports about a birth defect called microcephaly that officials are attributing to the sexually-transmitted Zika virus that is allegedly carried by a certain type of mosquito. Brazil has seen an upsurge in reported cases of microcephaly, and the virus’ appearance has apparently been confirmed as far away as Puerto Rico and the United States. Before hitting the panic button, however, let’s first assess whether there is actual proof of a causal relationship between the Zika virus and this birth deformity.

As noted on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, microcephaly is a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly.

Fear of a rampaging pandemic is being drummed into the minds of the general public by the media, just like there was a lot of hype over the measles and H1N1 scares from a few years ago. For instance, a recent article posted on the BBC News website revealed that Brazil has deployed over 200,000 of its soldiers for the purpose of going door-to-door to advise residents of the risks of the virus.
