UPDATE 9:19 pm (Pacific) – Sean (protester) updated live feed audience, FBI (through “Bill the FBI guy”) has promised no escalation, and offered to allow Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore to meet when she arrives. Protesters have offered to “turn ourselves in” (“we are not surrendering”) when Michele and Franklin Graham arrives in the morning. FBI apparently has agreed. Sean said, “It’s going against everything we believe in, but we’re going to do it.” “We are going to walk, one by one, and meet [Michele] and Rev. Graham at the checkpoint.”

UPDATE 9:23 pm (Pacific) – Nev. Assemblywoman says that Jeff and David and Sean and Sandy have succeeded in “putting out call to action” and several legislators from various states including Idaho, are en route to Burns, OR. “This live stream was brilliant, David Fry….you four in that Refuge have something to be very proud of…what you guys have accomplished has been amazing.”

UPDATE 9:29 pm (Pacific) – Sean (protester) informs FBI that “we would like to go to our tent, to keep warm. We are going to keep our weapons for protection. Is that okay?” “Do I have your word you are going to wait and not come in to get us…and are going to wait until the morning?…You have my word we are coming out in the morning.”

UPDATE 9:42 pm (Pacific) – Gavin played an audio message from Victoria Sharp (and her family), with message (“Stay calm, stay alive, we need your voices”) and singing (Psalm 27:1).

UPDATE 9:46 pm (Pacific) – All four protesters, along with Assemblywoman Fiore and her car full, Gavin and his family, offered prayer before retiring to sleep for evening and to end live feed. Live feed audience at 27,381.

UPDATE 10:54 pm (Pacific): The Bundy familiy is reporting that Cliven Bundy just landed in Portland and we are being told he was surrounded by SWAT and DETAINED.

UPDATE 11:30 pm (Pacific): Bundy, 74, was booked into the downtown Multnomah County jail at 10:54 p.m. Faces federal charges related to his armed standoff with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in 2014, including weapons charges.

UPDATE 8:13 am (Pacific): Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore (and 8 others elected officials from Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, etc.) at Oregon Refuge with four FBI agents. Protesters are unarmed (put personal weapons in vehicles), preparing to surrender. Rev. Graham is close, will be meeting with Fiore, and going together to retrieve protesters.

UPDATE 8:28 am (Pacific): Victoria Sharp and her mother on live feed, called on other patriots and “thousands of people” to peacefully go to Burns”, OR. Reports that FBI is making additional arrests, after Cliven Bundy, reporting that Blaine Cooper has also been arrested.

UPDATE 8:31 am (Pacific): Michele Fiore and Franklin Graham both present. LIVE FEED audience 13,954.

UPDATE 8:33 am (Pacific): Protesters received okay from FBI to bring out personal items, including LaVoy Finicum’s personal bible.

UPDATE 8:36 am (Pacific): Victoria Sharp’s mother on live feed, seems to be suggesting (after quoting from the Bible) that protesters should not surrender. Gavin taking control of the call, re-focusing the call to positive, and faith that no deaths or tragedy will take place. Victory and mother now singing on live call.

UPDATE 8:41 am (Pacific): Rev. Franklin Graham has arrived, on the phone with Sean and Sandy. “I love you, looking forward to giving you guys a big hug…I’m here for you guys.” Offers prayer. Rev. Graham says, “I’ve been praying for this for several days…I’m proud of you guys, I really am.”

UPDATE 9:05 am (Pacific): KrisAnn Hall called Gavin, on live stream call with protesters (Sean and Sandy) and Michele Fiore (at Mile Marker 20). KrisAnn says, “I have some very encouraging news for everybody…I talked with 24 legislators in Idaho yesterday.” Also reports she is getting calls “from legislators all over the country, asking for help…in defending the life, liberty and property of their people.”

UPDATE 9:33 am (Pacific): OregonLive.com is now confirming that Blaine Cooper has been arrested. Apparently the FBI in Portland declined to confirm or deny that Cooper had been arrested Thursday morning. Melissa Cooper has reported that Blaine was arrested in Springdale, Utah at the Canyon Ranch Motel.

UPDATE 9:34 am (Pacific): “We’re going to have Sandy go first, a female agent is going to intercept her.” Before surrendering, protesters are playing music (some kind of bagpipe anthem).

UPDATE 9:38 am (Pacific): “Alright, Sandy and I are going out. How many people are live streaming us?” Sean shouting at FBI “coming out.” David reports, “Sean and Sandy are holding hands, with other hands up in the air, now they are kissing and hugging.” David Fry reports the FBI is being “gentle” now “they are just patting her down…and scooted her away.” “So now Sean is standing with the American flag in his right hand.” KrisAnn interrupts “Why is it that when Congress….” etc. etc. etc. Gavin engages in conversation with KrisAnn.

UPDATE 9:43 am (Pacific): David Fry reports, “Now Jeff is going.” Live Stream is 19,887. Voice of Michele Fiore can be heard in background (apparently over a bull horn). David Fry is shouting, “Yea” meaning he can hear her.

UPDATE 9:45 am (Pacific): David Fry shouting, “Unless my grievances are heard, I will not go out.” He’s asking the FBI to call him on a cell phone. Gavin asks “What is going on? Go ahead and go out there.” KrisAnn speaks up “just go, like everyone else.” David, “They haven’t promised me anything. UPDATE 9:53 am (Pacific): KrisAnn and Gavin are trying to talk David into surrendering and going forward with the deal. Fiore is talking to David over the bull horn. KrisAnn “You are preventing God from acting in your life.” David “Sometimes its better just to die, liberty or death…I declare war against the federal government…they have been trampling on my First Amendment rights…there is no way to beat this anymore, its liberty or death.”

UPDATE 10:01 am (Pacific): David Fry responds to KrisAnn “I feel like I’m listening to a bunch of yappers…I’m here being peaceful…until my demands are met, I’m not coming out. Gavin and KrisAnn are making desperate attempts to connect with scripture, etc. Their attempts appear to be provocative and adding to his resolve to make a scene for himself.

UPDATE 10:10 am (Pacific): David Fry, “They need to promise me something.” KrisAnn Hall, “If you walk out peacefully you will have millions” of people watching. KrisAnn “Right now, I have media lined up, right now, if you walk out peacefully.” David “I can’t…if I go to prison I’ll probably be raped.” Gavin says “Our greatest fear is fear itself.”

I’m doing it for me. If you cared about the movement you would have been here. Most Americans…should have been here from the start…you guys still aren’t here…all the other people can riot for Trayvon Martin ya know…why can they riot and do all that…but we can’t.”

“Those taken into custody by the FBI were Jeff Banta, 46, of Elko, Nevada, Sean Anderson, 47, and his wife Sandy, 48, of Riggins, Idaho. They each face a federal conspiracy charge for their role in the occupation, joining 12 others already arraigned on that charge. At the final moment after the three had walked out, protester David Fry said he was feeling suicidal and wouldn’t give himself up. He demanded to talk to an FBI negotiator by phone as others repeatedly urged him to calm down and walk out. “I’m a free man and I will die a free man,” Fry said as the frantic conversation played out on a live feed online.

UPDATE 10:35 am (Pacific): David “I’m talking to FBI agent Mark.” David “You guys are telling me I’m safe to get to you guys, but I don’t want to be put behind bars, I don’t want to take that risk. Man wasn’t meant to be put behind bars… I haven’t killed anybody.”

UPDATE 10:36 am (Pacific): David “My grievances have’t been addressed….I have my freedom of religion…I am not a Christian, I am a messianic Jew…Judaism…until you guys can address my grievances, you’ll probably have to kill me.”

The Ronin and The Tea Master (version 1 of 2)

At the insistence of Lord Yamanouchi the daimyo of Tosa Province, a reluctant tea master was taken to Yedo (Yedo is the feudal name for the modern city of Tokyo.) on an official trip attired in samurai garb, including the two traditional swords of the warrior class. While running an errand for his master in the city, the tea master was accosted by a ronin (A ronin is a masterless samurai, literally a wave man (one who is tossed about like the waves on the sea). Lacking a benefactor, many ronin took up criminal endeavors to support themselves.). Since he was by himself and dressed beyond his station, this was exactly the thing the tea master feared might happen.

At first, he was so scared that he was unable to speak, yet was finally able to admit that he was not really a samurai. Upon discovering that his opponent was merely a tea master and not a fearsome warrior, the ronin was more determined than ever to take his money. The ronin declared that it would be an insult to the tea master’s province if he did not defend his honor. The tea master replied, “If you so insist, we will try out our skills, but first I must finish my master’s errand. Then I will return tomorrow morning for a duel.”

The ronin agreed and the tea master rushed to complete his errand so that he could talk with the master of a local dojo before his fateful meeting with the ronin. He intended to ask the sword master how he might die in the manner befitting a samurai. The sword master was taken aback by the question, saying, “You are unique. Most students come ask me how to use a sword. You come to me asking how to die. Before I teach you the art of dying, please serve me a cup of tea.”

Forgetting about his impending catastrophe, the tea master prepared tea in the manner he always did—as if there were nothing else in the world that mattered except for serving the tea. Deeply moved by the tea master’s intense, but natural concentration, the sword master exclaimed, “That’s it! That very state of mind is what you will need tomorrow when you go to meet the ronin. First think of serving tea to an honored guest and act accordingly. Draw your sword and close your eyes. When you hear his kiai (spirit shout), strike him with your sword. The contest will probably end with a mutual slaying.”

The tea master thanked the sword master and went on about his business. The next morning when he went to meet the ronin, he followed the sword master’s advice to the letter. The tea master boldly stood before his opponent, the embodiment of concentration. The ronin, who had previously seen a coward, now faced the personification of bravery. Instead of advancing to attack, the ronin retreated. Cowed with fear inspired by the superior concentration of his adversary, he turned and fled. After standing a while and hearing no shout, the tea master opened his eyes to gaze upon an empty street.

The Samurai and The Tea Master (version 2 of 2)

A Samurai warrior is as spiritual as a monk. He is the ruler of his mind as much as of his body. he trains his spirit through the form of meditation known as Zen. He can sit still for hours on end. Gradually reducing his thoughts until his sole focus is on his breath. no base passion, fear, discomfort or excitement shall control him even for a single second. He can endure the bitterest cold or the fiercest heat. When faced with death itself, his mind is perfectly still. The odds, the dangers and the enemies may be massively against him and yet his concentration, as sharp as his sword, may cut through them all.

Yes, he is a spiritual being indeed-but his spirit is the distilled essence of violence.

Such self control is not confined to the fighters of Japan, however. The master of the Japanese tea ceremony performs his peaceful duties with just the same concentration and focus of attention. as this story from Ancient Japan shows.

Several centuries ago, a tea master worked in the service of Lord Yamanouchi. No one else performed the way of the tea to such perfection. The timing and the grace of his every move; from the unfurling of the mat, to the setting out of the cups, and the sifting of the green leaves, was beauty itself. His master was so pleased with his servant, that he bestowed upon him the rank and robes of a Samurai warrior. When Lord Yamanouchi traveled, he always took his tea master with him, so that others could appreciate the perfection of his art. On one occasion, he went on business to the great city of Edo, which we now Know as Tokyo.

When evening fell, the tea master and his friends set out to explore the pleasure district, known as the floating world. As they turned the corner of a wooden pavement, they found themselves face to face with two samurai warriors.

The tea master bowed, and politely step into the gutter to let the fearsome ones pass. Although on warrior went by, the other remained rooted to the spot. He stroked a long black whisker that decorated his face, gnarled by the sun, and scarred by the sword. His eyes pierced through the tea master's heart like an arrow.

He did not quite know what to make of the fellow who dressed like a fellow samurai, yet who would willingly step aside into a gutter. What kind of warrior was this/ He looked him up and down. Where were broad shoulders and the thick neck of a man of force and muscle? Instinct told him that this was no soldier. He was an impostor who by ignorance or impudence had donned the uniform of a samurai. He snarled, "Tell me, oh strange one, where are you from and what is your rank?"

The tea master bowed once more. "It is my honor to serve Lord Yamanouchi and I am hi master of the way of the tea."

"A tea-sprout who dares to wear robes of samurai?" Exclaimed the rough warrior.

The tea master's lip trembled. He pressed his hands together and said, "My lord has honored me with the rank of a samurai and he requires me to wear these robes."

The warrior stomped the ground like a raging bull and exclaimed, "He who wears the robes of a Samurai must fight like a samurai. I challenge you to a duel. If you die with dignity, you will bring honor to your ancestors. And if you die like a dog, at least you will no longer insult the rank of the samurai!"

By now, the hairs on the tea master's neck were standing on end like the feet of a helpless centipede that has been turned upside down. He imagined he could feel that edge of the samurai blade against his skin. He thought that his last second on earth had come.

The corner of the street was no place for a duel with honor, however. Death is a serious matter, and everything has to be arranged just so. The samurais friend spoke to the tea master's friends, and gave them the time and the place for the mortal contest.

When the fierce warriors had departed, the tea master's friends fanned his face and treated his faint nerves with smelling salts. They steadied him as they took him into a nearby place of rest and refreshment. There they assured him that there was no need to fear for this life. Each one of them would give freely of money from his own purse, and they would collect a handsome enough sum to buy the warrior off and make him forget his desire to fight a duel. If by chance the warrior was not satisfied with the bribe, then surely Lord Yamanouchi would give generously to save his much prized master of the way of the tea.

These generous words brought no cheer to the tea master. he thought of his family, and his ancestors, and of Lord Yamanouchi himself, and he knew that he must not bring them any reason to be ashamed of him.

"No," he said with a firmness that surprised his friends. "I have one day to and one night to learn how to die with honor, and i will do so."

So speaking, he got up and returned alone to the court of Lord Yamanouchi. There he found his equal in rank, the master of fencing, he was skilled as no other in the art of fighting with a sword.

"Master," he said, when he dad explained his tale, "teach me to die like a samurai."

But the master of fencing was a wise man, and he had great respect for the master of the tea ceremony, so he said, "I will teach you all you require, but first, I ask that you perform the way of the Tea for me one last time."

The tea master could not refuse this request. As he performed the ceremony, all trace of fear seemed to leave his face. he was serenely concentrated on the simple but beautiful cups and pots, and the delicate aroma of the leaves. There was no room in his mind for anxiety. His thoughts were focused on the ritual.

When the ceremony was complete, the fencing master slapped his thigh and exclaimed with pleasure.

"There you have it. No need to learn anything of the way of death. Your state of mind when you perform the tea ceremony is all that is required. When you see your challenger tomorrow, imagine that you are about to serve tea for him. Salute him courteously, express regret that you could not meet him sooner, take off your coat and fold it as you did just now. Wrap your head in silken scarf and do it with the same serenity as you dress for the tea ritual. Draw your sword, and hold it high above your head. Then close your eyes and ready yourself for combat."

That is exactly what the tea master did when, the following morning, at the crack of dawn he met his opponent. The samurai warrior had been expecting a quivering wreck and he was amazed by the tea master's presence of mind as he prepared himself for combat. The samurais eyes were opened and he saw a different man altogether. He thought he must have fallen victim to some kind of trick or deception, and now it was he who feared for his life. The warrior bowed, asked to be excused for his rude behavior, and left the place of combat with as much speed and dignity as he could mater.

And that was the story of The Samurai and the Tea Master. You can gain mastery over your mind and spirit, you can overcome almost any difficult of danger. In fact, the impossible will soon become possible.
