'Whirlpool' - Gene Tierney, Jose Ferrer Hypnosis Scene - Sleep Deprivation & the Reliability of Subconscious 'Triggers' - Analysis
Leave it to Director Otto Preminger to develop this rather odd scene of a mixture of hypnotism, a bit of romance, and the power of subconscious suggestion.
Wife (played by Gene Tierney) of a prominent psychoanalyst (played by Richard Conte) visits a smooth operator (played by Jose Ferrer) who has somewhat blackmailed-persuaded her to consider hypnotism to cure her sleeping problem. Sleep deprivation still remains a serious problem in today's real world and is not confined to movie scripts and themes, and, here in this fictional film the power of suggestion is tested.
This is another example of someone taking or attempting to take the hand of Gene Tierney in film. Actor Herbert Marshall is shown taking Gene's hand and remarking how graceful it is, etc. in 'The Razor's Edge', starring Gene Tierney and Tyrone Power. In 'Whirlpool' we can see Jose Ferrer's character, while hypnotizing Gene's Character, Ann Sutton, ordering her to take his hand. The interesting result is an example of whether hypnosis subjects can be made to do that which they would ordinarily not do.
[Famous excellent actor Jose Ferrer would go on to appear in 'Cyrano de Bergerac' the following year of 1950 in which he received The Academy Award for best actor, Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, and was nominated – New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor. 'Whirlpool' is listed as released in 1949]
This deals with the subconscious mind vs. the conscious, awake person. We, the humans, have likely been given an awake and alert personality, a conscious, to help protect us from doing untoward or wrong behavior, however, in the subconscious it does appear that many human emotions and some basic judgement are not necessarily present so if a person's subconscious can be probed and tapped, it would seem such a subject could be severely used and abused.
In some point in the story Ann Sutton exclaims she's not interested in beginning an affair. However, some of the smooth, crooked operators may insist that nothing should be wasted, including opportunities to manipulate people!
Are Psychological Triggers Reliable Commands?
Isn't it possible that some morals can prevent a hypnotized subject from carrying out a command 'trigger', but other, seemingly less important, commands would be carried out? If, for example, the public is bombarded by violence, including lots of murder, it could desensitize people to murder. In that case a hypnotized subject might not, subconsciously, consider murder as something wrong and might carry out such a murder command.
Sleep-deprived persons could, possibly, be more susceptible to carry out subliminal commands and we have a public full of persons who rush to work or school, etc., on a few hours of sleep at times. Many head-on and other collisions have happened in the recent past which are rather unexplainable. Whether all the cell towers or power lines or S.D.I. aka 'Star Wars' syping are causing people to lose sleep or suffer disturbed sleep, sleep-deprivation remains a problem to this day.
Famous personalities who were sleep-deprived were Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, and others.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS A BIG DEAL. It might, possibly, create a weakened mental state where persons are in more of a subconscious mode while supposedly awake.
