(The Best Years in Life) Mononucleosis is an infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, a type of herpes virus similar to those that cause cold sores and chicken pox.

Mononucleosis earned its nickname "the kissing disease" because it is passed from person to person through saliva. Mono can also be passed on by sharing food, utensils, or drinking glasses. Moreover, the disease can be transmitted via blood transfusion.

Young people between the ages of 15 to 24 seem most susceptible to the disease, and after age 35, the risk of infection lowers significantly. Most people contract mono at some point in their lives, usually in childhood. In those with a strong immune system, the symptoms are mild and often come and go without notice.

In those with a compromised immune system, however, it can be a different story.
