F-35: The Pentagon buys other 167 engines, costs down
The Defense Department has reached an agreement with Pratt & Whitney, the manufacturer of the new engine for the F-35, for the next batch of engines for Lightning II. The agreement was reached to buy 167 engines that will power next two lots.
Specifically, the Defense Department has purchased 53 F135 engines for lot number 9 (F-35A) and 87 for the embarked version (F-35C) carried out in the lot number 10.
Unit prices were down 3.4% from the previous batch. Unit prices for the engines of the STOVL variant, 27 engines purchased in two batches, were reduced by 6.4%.
The Pentagon has not released the value of the contract. Pratt & Whitney has delivered 262 F135 engines. The engines of the lot 9 will be delivered later this year. The deliveries of the next batch will start in 2017.
