The striving for internal consistency, and where their is inconsistency to ones beliefs and attitudes, the tendency to avoid the situations and any information that may increase this inconsistency. To hold to only what is held to ones own internal consistency of beliefs and attitudes, while being confronted with new information that conflicts, cognitive dissonance.
