Reminder: Special Masterpiece "Sherlock" episode TONIGHT on PBS!
Just a heads-up reminder that tonight, Jan. 1 2016, PBS will be showing an all-new Masterpiece "special" episode of the acclaimed series "Sherlock" starring Benedict Cumberbatch. (Check your local listings.)
Great TV is rare, but for the most part PBS' "Masterpiece" delivers some of the finest TV programming available, such as the much loved "Downton Abbey" series which has one season yet to come.
Tonight's special "Sherlock" episode is unusual in that it takes place in the time period of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, the late 19th century.
TV Guide says simply:
Sherlock on Masterpiece The Abominable Bride | 9:00 PM, 1 hr 30 min 2016 TV-PG
In 1895 London, Holmes and Watson tackle a ghostly case: the apparition of a woman who committed suicide seems to be on a revenge-inspired rampage.
Here are some excerpts of an article at The Daily Beast:
‘Sherlock’ Sends Benedict Cumberbatch Back in Time to Victorian London The definitive modern-day version of the Sherlock Holmes story travels back to the Victorian era in "The Abominable Bride," a new special episode.
They finally got Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes to put on that iconic deerstalker cap.
When period-tinged photos started to leak from the set earlier this year, Sherlock’s co-creator Steven Moffat was quick to clarify that the change was made for this one-off special only, and not a permanent shift in the series.
"The special is its own thing," Moffat told Entertainment Weekly in March. "We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it - as we could hardly conceal - it’s Victorian." He added, "It’s kind of in its own little bubble."
