More of the Blame Game

I nearly choked on my coffee this morning reading the Timothy Stanley article about Monica Lewinsky posted at the Britain Daily Telegraph. Why is it every time Monica Lewinsky's name comes up, she's vilified or at least made the butt of jokes while Bill Clinton seems to have sailed right through that scandal relatively unscathed? No, he wasn't impeached for a sexual affair. He was impeached for lying to Congress about it. The last time I checked, with the exception of rape, a sexual encounter takes two. Why should Slick Willie (perfect name for him) be exonerated but Lewinsky's has had trouble even finding a job?

This mindset is as old as time and is to be seen on steroids in the more rigid sects of Islam. Really? A father or brother or even a community, would stone a victim of rape to death because 'she was no longer pure'! Why? Was she standing on a street corner with a sign begging someone to rape her? Pathetic! Go after those who raped her. Treat her like what she truly is, a victim.

How old was Lewinsky at the time of Zippergate? Most interns are teens or at the most in their early twenties. Granted even children know right from wrong at an early age. But the heady atmosphere of the center of power that is D.C., not to mention the President of the United States coming onto you? I doubt if she was the first intern to succumb to the powerful charms of the office if not the man who holds it.

As I recall Monica was far from the first of Bill's squeezes and as for the victim being 'poor Hillary' as this writer stated, give me a break! Hillary loves power as much or more than her husband. It was certainly her choice whether to forgive and forget or go through a nasty and very public divorce. I'd have just had him neutered. It's the only sure way to keep a tomcat from roaming.

But these elite seem to move in a far different stratosphere than the rest of us. Although this incident was world news for a while and fodder for the late night talk show hosts for quite a while, it seems that Bill is still welcome just about everywhere he goes. Monica has been vilified and made the scape goat. Why would that be?

How many times have we seen a man in power, perhaps the owner of a small business, or the CEO of a large corporation, a doctor/nurse or lawyer/secretary scenario play out the same way with the man remaining if not unscathed, at least intact while the woman is branded with a scarlet letter A on her forehead? The woman usually loses her job and quite often is forced to leave the community. Her life is in ruins. I'm not saying an adult woman shouldn't have to experience the consequences of her actions. I'm saying so should the man and to the same degree.

Timothy Stanley has, perhaps inadvertently, spouted the 'Good Ole Boy' attitude that starts in junior high school. The sexually active boy is just sowing his wild oats. He's a stud. His conquests are admired. A sexually active girl is a slut and is shunned. Come on people. It's time to come into the 21st century. In my view, Clinton bore even more responsibility to act in a moral manner. He was much older, held a position that, right or wrong, put him on a pedestal of respectability to maintain. And, just like an older school teacher with admiring students, it was his responsibility to set the tone of the relationship. The only claim to superiority that men still have is superior physical strength. I doubt if any wife is going to believe that some woman raped her unwilling husband.

There is no doubt in my mind that Clinton took full advantage of his position as president to prey on a younger, less sophisticated, star struck woman. And when the affair went public, used his powerful White House machine to discredit her to his advantage...or Hillary did. Shame on Monica Lewinsky? Hell no! Shame on Bill Clinton. What was it Mel Brooks said in "The History of the World Part II"? "It's good to be the king."

Stanley asks us to imagine how we'd feel if our husband was caught cheating and the contents of our marriage was discussed publicly. How would we feel if his mistress reappeared 16 years later to drag the whole thing up again. First of all, he would no longer be my husband. If he couldn't keep his pants zipped up when around the temptation of younger, prettier women, I would have considered him too weak and shallow to be worth keeping. He would have long ago become someone els's headache. So, sorry Stanley, if I had reacted in an honest and self supporting way instead of doing damage control with a view to my own political future in mind, I wouldn't much care sixteen years later what she said as long as it was the truth.

Secondly, as stated earlier, this was not Hillary's first experience in dealing with her husbands philandering and the consequences of such behavior in public life. Or has everyone else forgotten Jennifer Flowers for one? It's called public life for a reason. We expect our elected officials to maintain a higher moral standard – at least publicly. And had Clinton been thinking with the head on his shoulders instead of the one in his pants, he would have assumed that anyone he had an affair with, especially someone that young, wouldn't be able to resist talking to a girlfriend about it. I'm actually proud of the Secret Service and their ability to keep their mouths shut about the people they guard. We all know Clinton isn't the first president to abuse his position of power. Powerful men tend to have a strong sex drive and women are attracted to that power. It would take a very strong person to resist that temptation.

So, Hillary elected to stay married to this Lothario. That was her choice and her right. But it is also Monica's choice to exercise her right of free speech and to take up a cause to fight for. In my opinion, she is taking the lemons that a bad choice gave her and making lemonade out of it. Is she prompted by revenge? I don't know. Only she could answer that. I could hardly blame her if she was after the way she has been treated by nearly everyone. Maybe she hates to see someone with such poor judgment, as most political wives show, go after the top job in the nation.

People will have to decide for themselves what Monica's motives are. As for myself, I'm tired of the shaming of women and the back slapping of men in these situations. It's time we held both parties at least equally accountable for their actions. Or maybe the only accountability should come from the spouse. Maybe the press had the right idea with men such as Kennedy, if he truly was a skirt chaser. They considered it to be a private matter between husband and wife as long as the person was doing his job. Jackie, as with Hillary, had to know and evidently decided to stay in the marriage. I've always maintained that Clinton should have told Congress that his private life was none of their business but refuse to deny it. That's what got him in trouble, giving the Republicans all kinda of ammo. How many of them have fallen for the same reason since the Clinton/Lewinsky affair? The rest of the world laughs at us for our Puritan attitude. People are human. I only care that the blame, if there is to be any, is equal dealt out.

As for Hillary, if she can indeed put this scandal and all of his other ones behind her and make a run for the White House in 2016, more power to her. While I would love to see a woman in the top seat I won't be voting for her or her Republican opponent (Most likely Jeb Bush) Both are anointed by the Cabal. I don't consider voting for an Independent or Libertarian or a Constitutionalists as 'throwing my vote away.' And one day, when the majority of Americans wake up and realize what has been happening to our country while they slept, maybe they will join me. Maybe we will be able to return this country to We the People.
