BUT THEN THERE IS ARES, the Future Marines Tiltrotor Modular Tactical Plane?
A mythological name and a configuration of a vehicle is worthy of Star Wars, the ARES (Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System): the "transfomer" tiltrotor transport "flexible" designed by Lockheed Martin and already taken under the wing of the Marine Corps for the future operational use.
In collaboration with the Piasecki Aircraft Corp., Lockheed working on a steering wheel module that employed as the type of propulsion a pair of ducted fans VTDP (vectored thrust ducted propeller) convertible. This propulsion system would allow the vehicle "transformer" (TX) to rise from the ground vertically and then would provide the boost needed for flight.
The flight module ARES is designed to carry a variety of payloads for each kind of field operations. Would be able to transport and retrieve different types of detachable modules: loads for refueling operations, evacuation (CASEVAC), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
Flight testing of the ARES will begin in June 2016, although the program manager at Lockheed, Bob Wetherhall, revealed at IHS Jane's, which already from January will be performed several tests in Yuma Proving Ground, New Mexico. Once the system is successfully tested the concept and demonstrate its capabilities, the Pentagon could take over the development of the program to scan your system.
The United States Marine Corps (USMC), which already boasts an extensive use of aereoconvertibili takeoff VTOL like the Osprey V-22, has already shown a particular interest in the project, taking charge of development planning. The USMC plans to organize as soon as possible a Joint Capability Technology Demonstration jointly with other US military forces who need them as a flexible transport for logistics, transportation of personnel and tactical support missions for small land units.
