Authorities are saying this is a "plant-contained" leak, but the residents of the city of Metropolis are not necessarily convinced, and many are leaving town.

Honeywell is a uranium enrichment facility in Massac County across the river from Paducah, Kentucky, that utilizes our natural resource in downstate Illinois---fluorspar---from one of the few places worldwide where it can be found in abundance, in order to make nuclear material for power and for weaponry.

At about 8 p.m. tonight, it was reported that sirens went off inside the facility to warn of a release of UF6 gas, which is supposedly not hazardous unless it comes in contact with water. Those living near the facility, however, said they didn't hear any sirens. The photo shows a bizarre sight: a cloud hovering over the plant, possibly made worse by 81 percent humidity at the time the photo was taken.

But authorities have issued the "all is well" report. And most people are "sheltering in place" following the confirmed leak.
