Is there any question left in anyone's mind (who is still using it to think) that anything this man touches turns to caca and is not in our best interests? I can think of no better example than the Affordable Care Act, a misnomer if I ever heard of one. It is not affordable. It has thrown too many more people onto an already unaffordable Medicaid system. Unlike the right, I think the entitlement programs could have been made to work. Their original purpose was to be as a safety net. When used for that purpose, they would work well.
Let me give a personal example. When my daughter was three, she developed a serious eye problem. We began our rounds with doctors who didn't have a clue what it was. Since this started as she was recovering from chicken pox, I suspected a connection, but I'm not a doctor. One doctor operated on her for a blocked tear duct. After doing some heavy duty researching, I discovered that the symptoms are not the same, That doctor got paid two dollars a month for the next seven years. Don't mess with my kids!
Finally, my old GP at the time said, Get her to the eye clinic in Iowa City. I don't know what I'm dealing with."
An examination revealed that she had gotten a herpes virus in her eye which was eating the cornea away. (herpes zoster?) The point of this long story is, I couldn't work during this time because I had to take her to the clinic three times a week and my employer said they just couldn't keep me employed. This was before The Family Medical Leave Act. So I went on what was called ADC Aid to Dependent Children.
We were on this for two years. After a corneal transplant and subsequent visits were reduced to once every other month, I couldn't get back to work fast enough. And I had to fight to get off the system. They made their money by their head count and didn't want to lose anyone. I could never understand why anyone would want to live this way permanently.
But I don't know what we would have done without that safety net for those two years. I didn't see any Republicans knocking on my door with private aid. That is the problem I see with Republicans. With Democrats they seem to want EVERYONE on these government doles perpetually. How about regulating this behemoth agency better? How hard is it to determine whether someone really qualifies for assistance? If it is clear that an individual is milking the system, kick them off. But Obamacare is not the answer to the problem. It has just created worse problems.
I already had enough of an issue with insurance companies using people with no medical degree to tell my doctor whether they would okay a procedure or not. I even read one story about a doctor who was hired by an insurance company (It's been made into a documentary I believe) to make a determination on whether to pay for something or not. That sounds good on the surface. that's who should be making medical decisions besides yourself and your own physician.
But she said she got bonuses for denying coverage of expensive procedures. And, even when her conscience wouldn't allow her to deny care, she was over ruled often on her decisions. She would eventually resign as she couldn't live with herself.
Now we have bureaucrats making medical decisions? On top of which hospitals/doctors can ill afford to accept as payment the fraction they receive from Medicare and Medicaid. Doctors are retiring early, leaving the profession altogether or being forced to join a hospital where they are little more than peons in the system.
This article at WND was a real eye opener and well worth the time. And for anyone looking for a further good read, Dr. Hiebs book, "Surviving the Medical Meltdown" is well worth the money. Iowans are so smart!
