Michael Caine as Harry Brown IS Reality in 'Harry Brown' - FILM REVIEW & VIDEO TRAILER
Academy Award winning actor Michael Caine and the supporting cast of 'Harry Brown' deliver notably genuine and realistic performances in this 2009 British thriller film.
When a person looks about and sees a world filled with such austerity that the system actually breaks down and thugs prevail it is at least disappointing, but when one loses a beloved spouse and then a best friend is murdered it can compound the disappointment into abject disillusionment, especially if one is getting on in years. Sometimes that's the way life is - it takes a brutal turn, but, disillusionment can change a person's resolve and attitude. Such is Michael Caine's character, Harry Brown, a man who represents the citizen of today's world, a world that appears upside down at times, a world gone violent and out of control - Harry Brown is reality, itself.
Unfortunately, today's world is often a very violent world, and, beneath the sugar-coated political correctness of the media the streets of today's cities represent quite a starkly different and often violent picture, a picture of reality - reality that steps up to greet when one is away from the 'telly'.
Stories that contain violence, whether books, plays, or films, etc., should have clear reason(s) for the violent content - not just gratuitous violence for the attempt at entertainment. Here, the film 'Harry Brown' has a gradual trail of events in which the character, Harry Brown, is pushed and drawn into violent situations because of his resolve and standards of good character. For example, does a good citizen run from neighborhood crime problems? No. Does a good citizen back down. No, he stands up.....and so does Harry Brown. The plots here where character Harry Brown sets about getting the bad guys are cleverly arranged and more spontaneous instead of just trite straight-out revenge episodes. Some scenes have Harry in the background where the other players know he's there, but he isn't seen yet which creates enormous suspense as he must outwit his opponents since they outnumber him.
The real crime victims you may read about and hear of nowadays might not mean much to lots of folks, but to friends, relatives and loved ones of the victims, those crime victims may be very dear and represent great losses to those left behind. This film shows how the police and authorities are often hamstrung when investigating cases and trying to bring perpetrators to justice, often leaving survivors with great frustration. The authorities have somewhat limited time and expense allowances to spend per case in a world where cases are piling up ever faster.
Actor Michael Caine went back to his old home area near Elephant and Castle in South London to research Harry Brown. After meeting the kids there he said he realized how wrong he was about locking up youthful offenders and throwing away the keys, and indicated that those kids hadn't been given the proper opportunities. Information at the link says he spent a lot of time there talking to the kids as they filmed 'Harry Brown'. Making a film is also a learning experience. The problem of gangs, and, youths in gangs is worldwide, not just in the UK, of course.
There's something real about the film, 'Harry Brown'. Harry Brown is reality in today's world.
Sir Michael Caine: Harry Brown filming taught me of 'wasted generation'
Sir Michael Caine believes society has created a 'wasted generation' of children in Britain's inner cities.
