The MTHFR Gene Mutations as Connected To Chronic Illness: Part 1 Hawthorn University WEBINAR
"The MTHFR Gene Mutations as Connected To Chronic Illness: Part 1" with Marjie Andrejciw, MT (ASCP), MS, NC
Approximately 90% of people who suffer with a chronic illness could be a carrier of one or both of the Methylene Tetra Hydro Folate Reductase (MTHFR) gene mutations. There are two clinically significant gene mutations associated with this gene; the A1298C mutation and the C677T mutation. These mutations affect the methylation pathway, which is the beginning pathway for phase II detoxification. The methylation pathway affects over 100 different biochemical pathways in the body. People who have one or both of these gene mutations are at an increased risk of suffering with some sort of chronic illness. The goals or take home points from this presentation include:
• To define what are the MTHFR gene mutations
• To understand the genetics of the MTHFR mutations
• To learn how an impeded methylation pathway affects the biochemical pathways
• To realize how an impeded methylation pathway influences the neurotransmitters
• To realize how an impeded methylation pathway influences blood homeostasis
In Part 2 of this two part presentation (upcoming on April 1st) we will discuss how we can compensate for these mutations through diet, lifestyle, and supportive supplements to help prevent and/or heal from a chronic illness. We will also discuss specialty testing to help ascertain the imbalances caused from the methylation impedances and present some case studies.
Marjie C. Andrejciw is a Holistic Nutritional Counselor and a Defeat Autism Now! Practitioner. She specializes in chronic illness with an emphasis on autism. Marjie practices the Weston A. Price philosophies and is a member of the National Association of Nutritional Professionals (NANP). She earned her master's degree in Holistic Nutrition from Hawthorn University, and has over 10 years experience in the clinical laboratory as a certified Medical Technologist. Her practice is Circle of Life Nutrition, LLC. In May 2010 she complimented her practice by opening a retail store which carries only gluten and dairy free products. "Marjie's Gluten Free Pantry and Food Co-op" is located in the historic downtown district of Fenton, Michigan.
On a personal note, Marjie chose to be a nutritional counselor because of her own health concerns. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease in 2002. After seeing multiple doctor's, she was finally identified with having a gluten, dairy, and corn intolerance, as well as heavy metal toxicity, gut dysbiosis, and severe leaky gut syndrome. Frustrated with the conventional medical approach, she was determined to figure out how to heal her body. This led to her attending Hawthorn University. Many of her clients and customers appreciate the benefit of working with a practitioner who not only can sympathize, but also empathize with their condition and symptoms. Marjie's experience of working in the clinical laboratory gives her a unique advantage in understanding and interpreting laboratory test results.
