MURSITPINAR - air strikes of American and coalition aircraft against the fighters of the Islamic state forced the militants to retreat on the edge of the Syrian border of the Kobanya town whom they for days try to take, said Kurd officials in the city.

This city is now at the center of international attention after the advancement of fighters of the Islamic state. 180,000 people, mostly Kurds, fled into neighboring Turkey. Turkey has been confronted with rage of its Kurdish minority because it does not want to intervene.

The Islamic State hung his black flag on the eastern edge of the city on Monday, but since air strikes of coalition forces have been intensified.

"Now they are in the front of the city Kobani. Bombing was very efficient and the result is that the Islamic government was forced to withdraw from many positions," said a senior local official to Reuters.

"This is their biggest retreat since they entered the city, and it can be considered the beginning of the countdown of their withdrawal from the area," he said.

The Islamic state has advanced towards this strategically important city on three sides and hit it with artillery the despite fierce resistance by Kurdish forces.

Experts said that it was unlikely that their progress will stop the air strikes.

Turkey: Nine people were killed in protests over a Kobani

At least nine people were killed and dozens injured in protests across Turkey on Tuesday, local media reported, while the Kurds are asking the government to do more to protect Kurdish city in Syria from militants from the Islamic state.

Police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse demonstrators who burned cars and tires in the streets of Turkey's eastern and southern provinces where most Kurds live. Clashes also erupted in the largest city of Istanbul and the capital Ankara.

Five people were killed in Diyarbakir, the largest Kurdish city in the southeast of the country, where protesters clashed with police.

One 25-year-old boy was killed in a Varta, a city in the eastern province of Musa, and at least six people were injured in clashes between police and protesters, local media reported.

Two people died in the southeastern province of Sirte, and another in the neighboring Batman.

Interior Minister Efkan Ala has called for an end to protests. "Violence is not the answer. Violence provokes retaliation. With such an irrational approach should end immediately," he told reporters.
