Repost - A Patch of Blue trailer - Sidney Poitier, Elizabeth Hartman, Shelley Winters - Comment
Sidney Poitier, a refreshing screen presence in modern cinema, took the heroic role of 'Gordon' in 'A Patch of Blue', and with his sincere effort demonstrated how life could be instead of how life sometimes is. In a role that might be difficult to not overact, his character went the 'extra mile' in a sort of devoted intervention into the life of a blind woman, 'Selina', played by Elizabeth Hartman.
One of the very best things in this film is the concept that there is still kindness in this world and Poitier brings this through in 'A Patch of Blue'.
In 1963, Poitier became the first black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field
Elizabeth Hartman won an Academy Award nomination and was the youngest nominee ever in the Best Actress catergory at 22 years old. She was a newcomer who had done a screen test with MGM and Warner Brothers and was offered a leading role in the film. She seems absolutely perfect for the part and is very convincing as the blind 'Selina'.
She was plagued with mental depression much of her life and died when she reportedly jumped or fell from her 5th floor apartment in 1987. She also played the wife of Sheriff Buford Pusser with Joe Don Baker in 'Walking Tall'.
Shelley Winters won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in this film. She also did a wonderful job in the film comedy, 'Lolita', with Peter Sellers, James Mason, and Sue Lyon.
