So I’m digging a 17 foot diameter hole in the ground. I’m down about six feet. People ask me why I’m doing it? I answer that I don’t know WHY, but it’s good shovel & pick exercise for a 66 year-old. Maybe it’ll be an underground house, or a root-cellar, or a Zen garden out of the wind, or a pond, or...just a hole in the ground.

I’m building a sheepherder wagon, or maybe it’ll be a Gypsy wagon. Why? I don’t know. Just something I want to do. Why do I want to do it? Good question.

Asking WHY? is a search for reason, meaning, value and worth.

I find myself asking why, as often now, as when I was young. When I think of something to do–a project–I ask why? Why do it? What’s the point? Is there value in it?

And then the big question, if there is value in it, why do I think there’s value in it.

Asking why you want to do (or not do) something is a journey of self-discovery.

Need, want and desire (one of those usually) are the reasons we do things.

I need to live.
I want to live.
I desire to live.

I need to eat (if I want to live).
I need shelter (if I want to live).
I need clothing (if I want to live).
I need to be safe (if I want to live).
I need mental and physical stimulation (if I want to live).
I need emotional satisfaction (if I want to live).

What if I don’t NEED to live?

EVERYDAY

With that saying as a personal mantra, life takes on a blissful irrelevance. You accept the inevitable, which can happen at anytime. You accept the sudden changeability of life. You put a definite STOP to need. And because you don’t NEED to live, you are FREE to live. It’s very exhilarating.

NOT NEEDING to live does not reduce the want or the desire to live, but it does put want and desire in a more congenial framework. “Yeah, I want and desire to live, but there are limits to what I will do in order to live.”

I won’t lie, steal, cheat, deceive or betray to stay alive. And if attacked, I may or may not defend myself, after-all, I don’t NEED to live.

Being afraid of dying kinda makes one afraid of living.
